Free weights simply refers to weights that are handheld and not attached to any machine. They come in the form or barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells amongst numerous other varietys designed for specific workouts.

They can be incorporated into a home work out routine in a number of ways. A lot of people associate weights with bodybuilding and increasing size. This is big misconception. Although weights can be used to increase size they can also be used for cardio purposes and to strengthen and tone your body. In some cases they can also be used for therapeutic treatment to muscular injuries.

When incorporating free weights into your home work out routine you decide on what goals you want to achieve. If you are overweight and looking to lose weight as well as tone up then you should eat a low calorie, high protein diet and accompany this healthier regime with plenty of repetitions at a lighter weight. You should make your workout routine focused around cardio exercise and also include free weight exercises such as bicep curls and bench presses. Kettle bells are an excellent way to intensify your cardio exercises and are especially good when used during squats.

If you are not overweight but looking to put on muscle then you should lift heavy weights with fewer repetitions. This combined with a high calorie, high protein diet will help you to build muscle and gain weight. There are a lot of great exercises you can do with free weights to build muscle including bench presses, front raises, pec flys, hammer curls and shoulder presses. You should decide which muscle groups you want to target and work on them each day. Free weights are usually used for upper body exercises though they can help with leg strength for certain exercises such as squats.

Please be aware this article is only a basic overview of weight use at home it is advisable to seek professional assistance at your local gym to ensure you are performing the exercises correctly. Incorrect form when lifting weights is one of the main causes of injury in the UK within the fitness industry. Making sure you understand the theory and the form of the exercises you plan to undertake is key in acheiving positive results.

There have been several studies that show vibration plates do work including studies done by NASA.

NASA used the vibration plates as a way to combat the atrophy that occurs with astronauts in a weightless environment. Many people are now starting to use vibration plates as part of their workout routine thanks to the benefits they provide.

One of the big reasons they have become so popular is because they drastically reduce workout times meaning they are ideal for those who are busy and don’t always have a lot of time to work out.

The way vibration plates work is by vibrating your body from the feet up and creating rapid muscle contractions that help burn fat, strengthen muscle and increase bone density. They also have other beneficial effects for your body that might not be expected such as improving circulation, increasing metabolism and nutrient delivery.

Whilst using vibration plates may look simple it is recommended that you are supervised in using them at first as if you are using them incorrectly you will not get the desired benefits and could risk injury. Many gyms not have vibration plate machines so it is recommended to use one there with the guidance of an instructor.

Whilst the evidence for the benefits of the use of vibration plates are not 100% conclusive there are a number of celebrities such as Madonna and Jessica Alba who swear by them and credit vibration plate machines for their incredible figures. Many women find themselves with stubborn areas that they cannot shift fat and cellulite from. Vibration plates are especially good for this as they produce very intense workouts. Of course to truly get the benefits of using vibration plates they should be combined with a healthy diet and other forms of exercise.

Yoga has become incredibly popular in the last 10 years. This in no huge surprise due to a large number of celebrities touting the benefits of yoga and having the bodies to show for it!

Yoga is a fantastic form of exercise as it doesn’t just focus on the physical aspects of exercise but includes the mind. It is a perfect blend of the physical, mental and emotional well being. The main benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, better posture, relaxation and increased happiness.

Reducing stress is a big reason why many people choose to exercise and yoga is one of the best ways to achieve this. This is because whilst doing yoga you are encouraged to focus 100% on the exercise you are doing, this helps you to forget (for a period of time) about the causes of stress in your life and will allow you to reflect upon your problem and look at them in a new light when you return to them.

Yoga also encourages you to be ‘in the moment’ and forget about the past and the future. In this way it is very similar to meditation. Breathing is another point of focus in yoga; believe it or not, most people do not breathe in the best way possible for their body, especially when doing exercise. This is why people who have not been taught to breathe correctly will often find themselves exhausted quickly when doing strenuous exercise. Yoga teaches you how to breathe deeply giving your body increased oxygen to carry out exercise more easily.

Although being taught Yoga in a class would be the ideal many people cannot spare the time or money for yoga classes. If you are one of these people then do not despair – it is more than possible to learn yoga from your home. All you need is an exercise mat and the right instruction. Whilst I would encourage you to seek professional tuition at least to provide you with a solid platform on which to develop, there is also a wide range of yoga DVDs available for use at home.

There is more than one form of yoga; the most important thing to decide is which you want to do. You should find out as much as you possibly can about the different types and select a DVD on the one you want to practice. Another thing of great importance is the instructor on the DVD. Ideally you will look for an experienced instructor who has been practicing yoga for many years. Although it’s tempting for a lot of people to buy the last DVD of their favourite celebrity, this isn’t ideal as often such DVDs just skim the surface of yoga and concentrate mainly on increasing the individual’s celebrity status.

Knowing what kind of exercise equipment you should spend your hard earned money on can be a daunting task. If you splash out on an expensive piece of equipment only to find it doesn’t meet your expectations then not only are you out of pocket but you’re also lumbered with a piece of equipment taking up space in your home. For that reason it’s important to decide what type of exercise you enjoy doing and what you want to gain from it. If you want to increase stamina, lose weight and also gain strength there are few pieces of equipment as effective as steppers or stair climbers.

There are a couple of different types of steppers. The first type of stepper just consists of a board with 2 peddles which are operated manually by a pump when you start using them. Often they come with an integrated computer which tells you things such as how many steps you’ve taken, calories burned and the length of time your workout lasted. Steppers are ideal for those looking to get the benefits of stair climbing exercise but without the cost associated with a stair climbing machine.

The second type of machine is usually referred to as a stepper machine or stair climbing machine. They are usually more elaborate – with handles hold onto and often the steps will move with a greater range of motion.

Both types of machines have great benefits – which type you go for will depend on budget and how much space you have. The reason stair climbing exercises are so beneficial is that it mimics an action that is incredibly demanding on the human body. It takes great leg strength and cardiovascular endurance to be able to do these exercises for long periods of time. By using a stepper daily you can great increase your leg strength and cardiovascular system. Building leg strength and muscle using a stepper is ideal as it doesn’t involve the foot striking the ground in the way jogging or running does thus reducing the risk of ankle injury.

Another great benefit of steppers is they are ideal for burning calories and losing weight. Studies have shown that using a stepper burns two to three times more calories than brisk walking does. It is on par with jogging or cycling at a moderate pace. So combined with the right diet they are on excellent way to aid with your weight loss goals from the comfort of your home.

There are so many different types of exercise equipment you can buy for your home that it can be difficult to know the right route to go. A lot of the decisions you make will be based on your budget and how much space you have to spare. A lot of weight machines can be incredibly expensive and hard to store. The same can be said of many up market treadmills. Exercise bikes are less expensive but much like pedal bikes, many people find them uncomfortable to use for long periods of time. This is where recumbent bikes come in.

Recumbent bikes work in much the same was as a standard upright bike but they are designed for maximum comfort whilst still allowing you a proper work out. Exercise usually follows the maxim ‘no pain, no gain’ but with a recumbent bike you get all the gain without the pain. The reason recumbent bikes are so much more comfortable to use than an upright bike is because they offer full support to your back and buttocks so you can pedal without having to support your whole upper body. Recumbent bikes can be purchased as either a pedal bike or an exercise bike. Whichever you choose to get will depend on whether you prefer to do your exercise indoors or outdoors.

The advantages of a recumbent bike over an upright bike are not just comfort however. Recumbent bikes are a lot safer as they have a lower centre of gravity than an upright which means braking and stopping is much less hazardous. Your head is also much closer to the ground on a recumbent bike so any fall would carry less chance of injury. Health is another big part of what makes recumbent bikes so appealing. Many people quit regular bike riding due to chronic neck or back pain. This problem is alleviated with a recumbent bike at the lower seat means you are putting less stress and your back and entire upper body.

Due to the fact that recumbent bikes are usually associated with comfort and leisurely exercise a lot of people assume that they are not intense enough to really be of great benefit. This again, couldn’t be more wrong – though recumbent bikes are a lot less stressful for your body than other forms of exercise then still provide you with an incredible workout. An hour workout session on a recumbent bike can burn as much as 1000 calories depending on the intensity of your workout. If you’re looking to burn the calories and improve your fitness without discomfort or stress to your body then recumbent bikes are a great choice.

At the start of a new year many people will make the decision to get in shape. This is especially common as many people gain weight over the holiday season and want to get rid of it. However most people’s commitment to this starts and ends with getting a gym membership. Whilst some may keep up regular exercise at the gym these people are in the minority. Most people simply get a gym membership to almost force themselves into position where they’ll feel obligated to work out. When they realize that the time constraints of a job do not allow them to work at as often as they’d hoped they simply give up.

This needn’t be the case. A lot more people are now realizing that working out from home without the expense and inconvenience of a trip to the gym can be much more beneficial. Not only can you choose to exercise whenever you feel like it but you are not obligated to pay a monthly gym membership. If you do your workouts from home then you can adjust your workout regime to suit your work schedule. Of course working out isn’t the only thing you should focus on if you want to get yourself in better shape. Diet is also extremely important. Hard exercise without the correct diet will not produce the results you want to see.

When choosing the best workout from home you should decide on what your goals are. Some people simply wish to lose weight whilst others want to tone up at the same time. One of the very best pieces of equipment you can use in your home exercise regime is an exercise ball. Exercise balls, also known as exercise balls are incredibly diverse, are an inexpensive and are relatively easy to store.

There are a number of great exercises you can do with an exercise ball to increase your strength and flexibility. In most cases your exercise ball will come with a user manual that will illustrate the large array of exercises that is possible with an exercise ball. If not you could always check out this website for a definitive guide to exercise ball exercises.

One of the biggest benefits of using an exercise ball is to increase core stability. Your core is basically all the muscles in your midsection – your abdominals, lower and upper back muscles and your obliques. Having a well conditioned core is extremely important for all forms of daily activity and exercises. The reason your core muscles are so well worked using an exercise ball is because they have to work hundreds of times a minute simply to keep you balanced and stable.

These ‘micro movements’ are why the workout is so effective and why many users rave about the positive effect of the exercise ball. Without a well conditioned core you leave yourself prone to injury because an under developed core will struggle to support itself as you increase the strain on your body as a matter of course when resistance training.

An exercise ball will activate your core muscles in a way that many other traditional exercises would not. For example using weight machines will do very little for your core muscles because you do not need to balance and support the weight because it is on a train that supports the weight for you. Whereas doing sit ups or pushups using an exercise ball is perfect for this. Exercise balls are a fantastic addition to any home work out set up.

Although many people will choose not to spend money on expensive equipment it is worth looking into some of the excellent machines you can buy for use in the comfort of your own home. These include treadmills, rowing machines, weight stations etc. One of the most popular and beneficial of these machines is the multi station weight machine.

In a gym you would have separate machines to work each muscle group. Multi station weight machines work in much the same way but are compacted into one piece of equipment so you can have the benefit of a gym work in your own home. It is important to have the correct equipment especially for lifting weights. Many people opt to simply purchase free weights and lift them in whatever way they choose. Not only does this cause bad form but it also greatly increases the risk of injury and incorrect development of the muscle.

A good quality multi gym can be purchased for anything between £300 and £3000 and have in recent years become the ‘must have’ for weight training at home. Most multi gyms now have the functionality to be customised to your specific requirements. Most full size multi gyms will include a chest press, backrest pad, preacher pad, adjustable seat height, lateral pull down bar with adjustable motion and a basic leg curl action. These machines allows the user to obtain the benefits of a full body workout without having to clutter the house with additional exercise machines and free weights.

Being in good shape brings a vast amount of benefits to your life such as increased confidence, more energy and just being healthier all round. Most people know this but with feel they don’t have the time or motivation to get in shape. At the start of every year people purchase gym memberships with the best intentions but the find themselves slacking off and eventually not attending at all. This is doubly frustrating as they are not only putting off getting in shape but also paying for an expensive gym membership which they are not using. This needn’t be the only course of action however.

More and more people are now seeing the benefits of exercising from home. Not only is it convenient but it is also less expensive than going to the gym. You don’t have to wait for someone to be done with the piece of equipment you want to use and you don’t have to travel to get there.

When exercising from home you can chose to exercise whenever you feel like it. This is a big bonus as a lot of people have extremely hectic work lives so they have to fit their workout schedule around work. If you exercise from home then you can choose to do your workout in the morning before going to work. Of course the right equipment in your home isn’t the only thing you need. You also must have the right motivation and clear goals that you want to achieve. Many people find it helps to write out a plan for their diet and exercise regime each day so they know they’ll stick to it.

Like most people, I only have the budget and space in my home for one large piece of home fitness equipment. So when I was looking at which to get, I had to consider carefully. I found that there are many pro’s and con’s to both a treadmill and an elliptical, and listing them all out helped me make the right decision for my home. I hope that some of my thoughts will help you in your decision.

Any quality piece of home fitness equipment will have a display telling you the time you have been exercising and the calories you have burned. Excellent machines will also have stored workouts that you can challenge yourself with. I recommend that, no matter if you look for an elliptical or treadmill, you make sure that the equipment has what you need.

It’s important to consider which one you’ll get the better workout with because unless you have unlimited free time, you’ll want your exercise time to be effective. When you look at this area, an elliptical definitely comes out on top. With an elliptical, you’ll burn more calories. This is because, unlike a treadmill, an elliptical exercises both your lower and upper body. A treadmill can only workout your lower body, along with a little bit of arm swinging. That’s nothing compared to an elliptical. You’ll also have less pain after using an elliptical, since it will take all the pressure off your knees, a common complaint of people after using a treadmill.

You’ll want to look at how this home fitness equipment will fit into your home. Both machines, unless you get one of the noise dampening varieties, will be fairly noisy when you use them. In general, a treadmill makes more noise when it is being used. One good thing about the treadmill is that most models can be folded up for easy storage, making it take up less space than an elliptical.

You’ll have to make the choice for yourself on which piece of home fitness equipment to purchase. Obviously, I would recommend an elliptical, but that is your decision. Remember that no matter what the pro’s and con’s are, the biggest consideration is if you will use that equipment.

Different pieces of fitness equipment and different ways of exercising all have their own particular pro’s and con’s. Depending on your personality, some exercise types will work better or worse for you. In this article, I’ll try to cover some of the ways that exercising on a stationary bike can be a good idea for some people and a disaster of a plan for others. I hope that by using this information, you can decide if a stationary bike will be right for you.

It may seem pretty basic, but it’s pretty important for you to understand that on a stationary bike, you won’t be going anywhere. Even a treadmill will make it seem to your brain like you’re moving further than you’ll feel on a stationary bicycle. For some people, this can be a problem. They like the feel of the wind rushing around them as they bicycle around and like the scenery that they pass by. For the first problem, you can set up a fan next to you while you use a stationary bike so that you never get too hot. The problem of a change in scenery can be used to your advantage, as we’ll see next.

One of the unique advantages of using a stationary bike is that you can multi-task. You can read a book, listen to music, or watch television all with ease. These things can help you fend off boredom and even help you ignore the fact that you are exercising. And if you’re addicted to a few shows on television and can manage to exchange the sofa for the stationary bicycle, you can really get in shape.

Speaking of which, it’s important to keep in mind what you’re getting out of a stationary bike workout and what you’re not getting. You can easily burn 500 calories per hour at only moderate intensity. Unfortunately, you’ll only be building muscles in your legs and maybe abs, depending on the stationary bike set-up. If you’re looking for a full-body workout, this is not the answer.

A stationary bike can be a valuable tool to get in shape. If it sounds like the right way for you to exercise, try one out today at a local gym and consider getting one for your home.

Some people are looking for novel ways to exercise. Treadmills and stationary bikes just aren’t interesting anymore. Even the relatively exotic elliptical has lost its charm. If you’re looking for a piece of home fitness equipment that is off the beaten path, so to speak, consider a rowing machine. When used correctly, a rowing machine can give you a full-body cardio workout. Let’s take a look below to see if a rowing machine is the right choice for your home.

I hope you noticed that phrase “when used correctly.” It’s very important when it comes to using a rowing machine. If you have proper form when using a rowing machine, you can generate a workout that is safe and gives only a low amount of stress to your joints. If you don’t have the proper form, it can really hurt your knees and elbows especially.

If you can manage to get the hang of the technique, you can really get a great workout with a rowing machine. Using it properly will exercise so many muscle groups – legs, abs, shoulders, back, and arms. They’ll all be working hard and getting you in shape. But it’s not like lifting weights. Like running or using an elliptical, using a rowing machine is a cardio workout with variable resistance that will build muscle.

One thing that you will need to be aware of before you would purchase a rowing machine for your home is that they tend to take up a lot of room. If you have a good sized space set aside for workout equipment or are willing to make any sacrifice to get in shape, this may not be a big deal for you.

Before you would buy a rowing machine, I recommend that you take one for a spin at a local gym to make sure you can adapt yourself to using one properly. Good luck!
